Frequently Asked Questions
1.9.12
Q. When will the People Mover system go out of service?
A. The IU Health People Mover train system will cease operations at midnight, Sunday, Jan. 15.
Q. How long will the People Mover be out of service?
A. The IU Health People Mover train system will be out of service for an estimated 12 weeks beginning Monday, Jan. 16.
Q. Why is the train being taken out of service?
A. IU Health’s People Mover system has more than one million miles on it. The system is being taken out of operation for a major overhaul because it has become increasingly unreliable over the past year, with unanticipated stops, doors not opening and other operational issues.
The train’s radio drive system was replaced while keeping the system in operation, but that alone has not been enough to provide the reliability IU Health requires of the system. To ensure the safety of train passengers, a complete overhaul is being performed on the train’s control systems and related software, including all of its wiring and many electronic components.
Q. Who is doing the work?
A. Milwaukee-based Rockwell Automation Control Systems will perform the upgrades and repairs. Rockwell engineers are scheduled to work around the clock to accomplish the complex work as quickly as possible.
Q. What is being done to the train?
A. IU Health has engaged Milwaukee-based Rockwell Automation Control Systems to perform a complete upgrade of the train’s control systems and related software, including all of the wiring and many electronic components.
Rockwell engineers are scheduled to work around the clock beginning Monday, Jan. 16, to accomplish the complex work, which includes replacement and upgrading of connectors, wires, boxes and software, as quickly as possible. The trains will be, in essence, dismantled, upgraded and put back together again.
Once the complex work is completed and the trains and their systems have been tested, the insurance carrier will validate the safety of the system before it goes back into service carrying passengers.
Q. Why will it take so long?
A. To fully upgrade the train system, the cars must be essentially dismantled before the upgrades can be performed, and then put back together again once work is complete. Rockwell engineers will work around the clock to accomplish the work as quickly as possible.
Q. Why are both trains being taken out of service?
A. Because most train evacuation plans call for train-to-train evacuation, it was decided to take both trains out of service, rather than leave a single train in operation.
Q. Will IU Health provide shuttle service while the trains are unavailable?
A. Yes, IU Health will provide shuttle service between the hospitals, Path Lab/Fairbanks, Gateway and various parking lots. Route and schedule information is posted on Pulse. The shuttles will run Monday-Friday (not including holidays) approximately every 24-28 minutes at each location. Each shuttle can accommodate 16 seated passengers and some standing, if necessary. They are wheelchair accessible and each can accommodate two wheelchairs.
In addition, IU Health staff who currently park in remote parking areas on the University/Riley campus will receive an e-mail this week offering them the option of parking under I-65 near 11th and Senate, and taking the IU Health shuttle from those lots to designated stops on the University/Riley campus. Those who choose to continue in remote parking on the University/Riley campus will need to use the Jag IUPUI shuttle as of Monday, Jan. 16.
Q. How do I learn more about the shuttle service?
A. Day and evening schedule route maps for shuttles running between the main campuses, including Parking Lot X and parking lots under I-65, are posted on Pulse. (Existing shuttle service between Gateway and its parking lots will continue as usual.)
Q. What if I need to travel between campuses when the shuttle is not available?
A. If you have a STAT need to travel between campuses when the shuttle is not available and you do not have any other means of transportation, call Safety & Security Dispatch at 317.962.8000.
Employees who have a vehicle and choose to drive between campus locations should follow their department’s policies regarding any parking fees incurred.
Q. I am a leader. The shuttle schedule will not be sufficient for many of my staff, and they will have to drive among our campuses. What parking options are available to them? Will they be reimbursed for any parking fees they must pay?
A. The Vermont Street Garage and the Wilson Street Garage on the University/Riley campus have chaser card systems. You can learn more about how these work and order a supply of these cards by calling Marian Helms at 317.274.4637. As the chaser cards are used, the parking fees will be charged back to your department.
On the Methodist campus, staff with an IU Health parking sticker may park in any of the surface lots at no charge. Request these stickers (at no charge) from IU Health Safety & Security.
Blue parking vouchers for Garage 1 on the Methodist campus are available in packages of 200 through Lawson (Stock # 25014). Your department will be charged $2 for each voucher that is used.
